The daily lives of people in many countries came to grinding halt. Human interaction and movement were now dictated by the newly imposed regimes called “lockdowns” and “social distancing”, with a vocabulary that was as mysterious and variable as the virus. But the paper argues that the pandemic offered hitherto unknown vistas for both creators and receivers of the animated image; the cinema, both as an art and an industry, came up with its own strategies to cope with the times. The author, himself a film director, strives to document the experience of Sri Lankan film professionals as well as audiences caught in the straits of disaster. La crise sanitaire qui s'est abattue fin 2019 dans la ville de Wuhan en Chine a fait naître en 2020 une pandémie sans précédent dont l'ampleur, la gravité et les implications étaient peu connues dans le monde. La vie quotidienne des habitants de nombreux pays s'est arrêtée brutalement avec des « confinements » et la « distanciation sociale ». L’article propose de faire découvrir la manière dont le cinéma a élaboré ses propres stratégies pour non seulement survivre à ce désastre mais aussi en tirer parti en faisant naître un nouveau cinéma, un cinéma Covid. La réflexion offre des perspectives à la fois personnelle et collective, centrées autour des réalisations de cinéastes du Sri Lanka, l’auteur lui-même en faisant partie.
